What is a Mini Dental Implant?

posted in: Dental Implants | 0

Mini dental implants serve an entirely different purpose than their traditional dental implant counterparts. While traditional implants serve to replace individual missing teeth, mini implants are used to stabilize full dentures in the upper and/or lower jaw. They keep dentures in place and prevent uncomfortable rubbing & sliding.

What is a Mini Dental Implant?

The Details

Mini dental implants are composed of small titanium posts that are placed into the gums and jawbone. Titanium is biocompatible, so the posts naturally fuse to the jawbone and provide stability to the dentures. The dentures have an opening on their underside which fits into the top of the post, which is shaped like a ball-and-socket joint. Four posts are generally needed on the bottom jawbone, while it make take 4-6 in the top jawbone.

The Benefits

Mini dental implants have a variety of benefits. In fact, they can be life changing if your dentures are uncomfortable, or just simply inconvenient (which, we all know they are).

  • Prevent bone wearing from sliding dentures
  • Slow down bone loss & gum recession
  • Allow you to eat all your favorite foods
  • Restore ease of speech

The Process

At your next visit to Pacific Sky Dental, let Dr. Jone know you’re interested in mini dental implants. He’ll do some x-rays to ensure your jawbones and mouth meet the qualifications. Because mini dental implants are smaller than traditional implants, there’s less recovery time afterwards. Depending on your needs, mini dental implants can be placed in just one visit!
